Sarah Applebee: "The Chase" (Exclusive Feature/Interview)
When did you first realize your ability to sing?
It was already when I was a young girl and watched the Eurovision Song Contest. I dreamt about being on that stage myself one day. I was in front of my mirror, singing and dancing, basically every day as a child.
What is your music and message all about?
This song is about chasing your dreams in life and about stumbles on the way.
How would you describe your vocal style?
My vocal style I would say is a mix between soul, pop and a hint of country.
What was the hardest part of making this song?
The hardest part writing this song was to get going with the lyrics. I had my thoughts and feelings in my head but didn’t know how to get it down on paper. Roy had some amazing tips and helped me guide me through the process. This has helped me so much for future songwriting as well.
What was the most enjoyable part of making this song?
I must say writing the lyrics was the hardest part, but definitely also the part that I enjoyed the most. All the brainstorming together with my producer Roy Hamilton was truly fun. Another thing that I loved after writing this song was to hear it all come together, step by step with each instrument adding to the song. The vision in my head became reality and it was truly amazing.
What is one feeling you want to leave listeners with?
I want the listeners to feel that it’s okay to not have everything set in life already. Life really is about the journey and not the end goal, which I think many people forget sometimes - including me. We keep thinking about the future and fighting to get to where we want to be - but we forget to actually enjoy and cherish what we do have.
How do you prepare for your live performances?
I need to be in peace and quiet before live performances. I prefer being alone and just be in my own head and focus. I might want to go through some lyrics or just visualizing the performance in my head.
