Sabina Collazo: 'The One You Lost' (Exclusive Interview)

Sabina Collazo: 'The One You Lost' (Exclusive Interview)

What inspires your music?

I started writing music in the midst of the pandemic because I needed a creative outlet. Most of what I've done is musical theatre and when that medium disappeared for the foreseeable future, it was heartbreaking. I needed a way to turn my pain into art. Now I process a lot of my feelings, good and bad, by songwriting.

How did you start your professional recording career?

When I finished writing my first full song, I reached out to my uncle, a guitar professor at the Conservatory of Puerto Rico, to see if he had any connections. We finished one song, but it took a while because we were so far away. Once I had a few more songs fully written, I met a friend of a friend who is a producer in NYC and we ended up recording four songs in his home studio.

How did you come up with your single and/or EP?

I wrote this song after a breakup in which I decided to walk away from a relationship that was no longer serving me. I think we often feel like we're "stuck" or like we can change the person, but I've come to a point where I've realized life is too short for that and love shouldn't be one sided. This song is about taking back your power and choosing yourself and sometimes that means walking away from something you once wanted.

What is your genre of music?

I would say I fall into the pop genre, with some dance pop elements and latin pop in some of my songs.

Who are your influences?

I really admire Taylor Swift, Karol G, Aitana, Sara Bareilles, Katy Perry, Adele. A lot of female artists now that I think about it. I've noticed all of them have allowed their music to shift based on where they are in life, while maintaining their own voices, and that is so special. Other artists I really look up to as songwriters are Finneas and JP Saxe, their lyrics are very clever and really get to the heart of it.

How do you define success?

If my music can make people feel less alone in their experiences, if they can relate and feel seen, then I've done my job.

What can we expect from you in 2023 and beyond?

I'll have one single each month for the rest of the year and I'm hoping to release even more beyond that!
