Mel Monaco: 'Volition' (Feature/Interview)
How'd you come up with your stage name?
In truth, I went with good ol' alliteration. My full name is Melissa and my last name also begins with 'M'; so I shortened it to Mel and opened up an Italian English dictionary in search of another 'M' word that had a nice ring to it! Mel Monaco!
How did you get your start in music?
I started out quite young on the stage. I have always loved singing and dancing, so I have tried everything in performance from figure skating to musicals, everything in dance from tap to hip hop, and every kind of instrument from flute to violin. Eventually I settled on piano, guitar and musicals which is where I truly found my voice. I also found writing! I make sense of the world through lyrical memories and creative exploration.
Is music a big part of your family?
Music is a big part of my family. My mother was a Ukrainian dancer and my father was a Rock n' Roll drummer, even won competitions and had his time in the sun! Needless to say, rhythm and creativity run throughout our family and I am so thankful for the firery spirit I've inherited.
What artists and songs did you grow up listening to?
Too many to count, BUT if I had to list a few of my favorite artists, they would be Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone, Bill Withers, Ladi6, Alicia Keys, Jamiroquai, and Peggy Lee.
What is the biggest message you want to bring to your audience?
Anything is possible. Never give up! And NEVER let anyone dim your light. Shine BRIGHT! Be proud of who you are, where you've come from and where you're trying to get to. We all have our own paths to walk, regardless if you make it to the 'finish line', there is integrity in remaining strong for yourself and for those following in your footsteps. We're in this together. Be kind, be true, be you.
What has been the most challenging part of your music journey?
Remaining strong. Being vulnerable and sharing some of your deepest thoughts in musical/lyrical form can be overwhelming at times. I remind myself to always be brave, share positivity and to speak my truth.
Any good vocal health tips you can share?
VOICE REST. Take days where you do not speak at all, weeks or even a month (if you can manage it). Mental clarity and physical healing often stem from silence. Your mind is very much connected to your voice. If you think you can, you can. And of course, after any voice rest make sure you have some technical vocal warm ups and do them before every performance.
