Alex Néva: 'Playing With Fire' (Exclusive Interview)
What is the most important thing you want your fans to know about you?
I would want them to know that I write my own lyrics, and how important that is to me. Not every story I tell is my own, but the words are mine. I get that a lot of artists have teams of songwriters working with them, and that's great, but I don’t, and I take pride in that.
What is your recording process like for this song?
This song started as a sketch on the piano, with just the first verse and chorus, and I took it to my producer so we could try to finish it. The first demo really didn’t feel right, I think it turned out a bit too happy, and we ended up scrapping the song. After a full year I asked if we could revisit it, but change up the entire production. I had finished the lyrics and felt like they were special, so we made a new demo that eventually turned in to the final product that’s out now.
What do you want your audience to feel when they listen to your music?
I want them to feel seen, like someone else has gone through the same thing they’re going through, and that they came out on the other side. I’d like to provide a soundtrack to both ordinary and extraordinary experiences.
How would you describe your genre and sound?
I would say I identify as a pop princess, writing lyrically driven pop. I tend to lean towards more alternative pop, with an urban and moody sound.
What are your goals and aspirations for 2023?
I want to release as much music as possible, and eventually put together an EP. So far 2023 has been really good to me, and I hope the rest of the year is just as giving. I hope to reach even more new listeners internationally, and connect with them as much as I can. I dream of being able to live off music, and hopefully 2023 will help me along the way.
