Rebecca Barron (Exclusive Interview)
How did I get my start in music?
I have a background in Performing Arts. I used to do a lot of acting but was never able to sing. It wasn't until I was 16 and went to college to study Drama, I was told that I would need to be able to sing for the shows. This led me to take singing lessons and after a few weeks, I knew that music was my thing. I then started learning the guitar. Once my confidence grew I went out to open mics in my local pubs and would perform acoustic covers on a weekly basis. It just grew from there really and I started writing my own material and getting gigs.
How would you describe your vocal style?
This is quite a difficult question to answer as many people have described my voice as unique. I'd say I have a rock voice. My voice has been compared to artists such as Alanis Morissette, Stevie Nicks, and PJ Harvey.
Who are your top musical influences and inspirations?
I have always been inspired by female rock artists/bands such as Halestorm, Evanescence, Alanis Morissette, Dorothy, The Pretty Reckless, and Garbage. I love these artists because their music has so much emotion and passion. Also, I find their lyrics very personal and relatable.I always look to them when I want to write a song.
Can you describe your songwriting process?
I tend to gather inspiration from listening to my favorite bands as I mentioned in the last question. My songs usually start from a particular emotion I'm feeling and then the lyrics flow to me. I cannot force it. Generally, it takes me an hour to write a draft of the song and then I spend a few weeks making improvements to it.
How did you make the Wild Side EP? What was your process?
So I started writing for this EP back in 2020 when the lockdown hit. I spent some time reflecting on my life and experiences and all these songs are written from that. Then in the summer of 2021, I went into the studio and started the recording process. My producer played the guitar and bass for it and hired two drummers to play the songs.
How do you balance having two bands?
So I have an original band where we play the songs off of my EP and the new ones I've written. I am the vocalist for another band called Extinktion. In this band, we play a lot of punk and emo covers; currently, the band is writing some of their own music. I make sure we have weekly practices for both bands. I am constantly learning new songs which are fun and exciting but can sometimes be challenging as I have to do that for both projects. I have a lot of things to learn and remember.
What kind of new music can we expect from you for the rest of the year?
Currently, I am working on a new song called "Bad News". This is a 90's style pop/rock song about liars and manipulators and how we should find the strength to walk away. I am going into the studio very, very soon to get it properly recorded. I also plan to do a music video for it as well as this will just be a single. I aim to release this by the mid-Autumn time this year.
