Keyona Lashawn: 'Time & Space' (Exclusive Interview)

Keyona Lashawn: 'Time & Space' (Exclusive Interview)

When did you first realize your ability to sing?

My family first realized I could sing when I was two years old. I sung happy birthday to my grandma and they were like she is really singing singing lol. For me I realized I could sing when I was 5 years old when I did my first talent show. The reaction from the audience and my peers felt good but the way performing made me feel it was indescribable and unmatched to any other feeling I’ve ever felt.

What is your music and message all about?
The message in my music is love. I want to make you feel something in your soul when you hear one of my songs. Whether it’s a song that I wrote for someone else or myself. I want to make music that can heal relationships or make you see your value and leave a unhealthy relationship.

How would you describe your vocal style?

My vocal style is a mixture of the sound of rhythm and blues the passion of soul and the storytelling of country the harmonies of jazz and the faith of gospel.

What was the hardest part of making this song?

The hardest part of making Time and Space was not necessarily writing or recording the song but it was the life lesson I learned which inspired the song. Which is it’s ok to put you first and choose you. To be the best version of yourself sometimes you need to take some time and space and really reflect and heal, regroup, refill your cup and come back with a better version of you.

What was the most enjoyable part of making this song?

The most enjoyable part of making time and space was stacking the harmonies. Recording harmonies brings me back to when I was younger and when my friends and I would sing  a cappella, and harmonize with each other, it’s my favorite part of recording any song.

What is one feeling you want to leave listeners with?

When you hear time and space I want you to feel inspired and understood. Inspired to put you first and not feel guilty for it and I want you to see that your not the only person going through this.

How do you prepare for your live performances?

Lots of tea ginger lemon and honey. I listen and go over the songs. I pray and ask god to use me even if it’s just to touch one person.
