Jasmine AlexJ: 'cinnamon girl' (Feature/Interview)
When did you first realize your ability to sing?
I first realized my ability to sing when I was about four years old and I began writing and singing songs with my sister in a band we made up and called “The Band of 20 Songs.” My love for music has been present throughout my whole life but I officially began training around the age of nine.
What is your music and message all about?
My music varies but I remain in the pop-ballad style/genre. My songs are my stories; they are honest and emotive. Whether I am singing about loving your skin, or about heartbreak, there is always a very clear storyline.
How would you describe your vocal style?
My vocal styles include classical and pop. This versatility allows me to explore my artistry within these genres, and even begin to combine the two.
What was the hardest part of making this song?
The hardest part of making my song “cinnamon girl” was trying to capture the important message about loving your skin and how it is not always an easy thing, while also keeping the song light and fun.
What was the most enjoyable part of making this song?
The most enjoyable part of making this song was being able to explore my production style a bit more. This song is not one of my usual ballads and it allowed me to expand my creative capabilities.
What is one feeling you want to leave listeners with?
For this piece, I want to leave listeners with a loving feeling. Not only towards other people of colour but towards themselves too. This is an upbeat, fun, self-love song that is meant to uplift and help listeners embrace the beauty within their skin.
How do you prepare for your live performances?
For live performances, I spend many hours practicing and keeping up with my vocal work. I put time aside to think thoroughly about how I can keep my audience engaged and how my sets can move as smoothly as possible. This includes song introductions, movement, and well rehearsed pieces.
